Each year the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management awards more than 35 scholarships totaling over $70,000 to incoming and current students in the Department of Kinesiology and Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management. The scholarships are awarded based on factors such as academic achievement, involvement in community service, and commitment to your intended profession.

Department of Kinesiology

For incoming freshmen

Freshmen who are entering the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree program are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

The Faculty and Staff Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman enrolled in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management.

Amount: $500
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: Must be an incoming freshman with a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Apply for the Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The Phillip K. Hardwick Scholarship recognizes a student enrolled in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management for outstanding community volunteerism or philanthropy.

Amount: $500
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a commitment to community service or philanthropy. Both incoming freshmen and current PETM students are eligible to apply.

To apply, submit:

  • a one-page letter or outline detailing your record of community service and philanthropy including dates of service and outcomes, if applicable.

Apply for the Phillip K. Hardwick Scholarship

The Department of Kinesiology awards the Anna A. Schmook Scholarship to an incoming freshman student at IUPUI who intends to major in exercise science, fitness management and personal training, or physical education teacher education and intends to live in the PETM Housing Community in University Tower.

Eligibility criteria: Must be accepted for admission to IUPUI and the School of Physical Education & Tourism Management pursuing a major in the Department of Kinesiology, and must have submitted a housing application for the University Tower and identified the PETM Community as their community of choice intending to reside in the PETM Housing Community for the 2018-2019 academic year.

    • How do you plan to contribute and be an active participant in the PETM Community?

Apply for the Anna A. Schmook Scholarship

The Department of Kinesiology awards the Jeff and Susan Vessely Scholarship to an incoming freshman enrolled in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management who intends to major in exercise science, fitness management and personal training, or physical education teacher education.

Amount: $2,000

Eligibility criteria: Must be an incoming freshman with a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher who plans to major in exercise science, fitness management and personal training, or physical education teacher education.

For incoming freshmen

Freshmen entering the Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management degree program are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Bo L. Hagood Scholarship to an incoming freshman or a current freshman who will be a sophomore in the fall pursuing the tourism, conventions, and event management major.

Amount: $1,000

Eligibility criteria: Must have a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher and work in the hotel, tourism, or other hospitality industry. Preference is given to minority students, but all students are encouraged to apply.

Current students in the Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management degree program are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Eligibility criteria: Must be a sports management major, have a GPA of 2.75 or higher, and demonstrate community engagement and field experience.

  • a resume that highlights your sports management involvement
  • a 500‐word essay telling a funny story related to your university and/or sports management community engagement, volunteerism or coursework; or your essay may discuss how your work and planned career in sports management brings happiness to yourself and others

Apply for the 5i Solutions Inc. Sports Management Scholarship

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Ray Dault Scholarship to the top freshman, sophomore, and junior TCEM students.

Amount: $250
Number given: 3
Eligibility criteria: The scholarship is awarded to the top full-time freshman, sophomore, and junior TCEM students as judged by GPA in their major coursework. To receive the scholarship, students must submit a 500-word essay on care, pride, and skill in the hospitality industry. Freshman must have attended IUPUI for two semesters; sophomores and juniors must have attended IUPUI for the last three consecutive semesters.

Students will be notified if they are eligible to submit the essay.

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Bill Day Scholarship to the top full-time senior TCEM student.

Amount: $500
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: The scholarship is automatically awarded to the top full-time senior TCEM student by GPA in their major coursework for the spring semester of his or her senior year. Eligible students will have attended IUPUI for three consecutive semesters.

No application is required.

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Bo L. Hagood Scholarship to an incoming freshman or a current freshman who will be a sophomore in the fall pursuing the tourism, conventions, and event management major.

Amount: $1,000

Eligibility criteria: Must have a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher and work in the hotel, tourism, or other hospitality industry. Preference is given to minority students, but all students are encouraged to apply.

Apply for the Phillip K. Hardwick Scholarship

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the P. Nicholas Kellum Scholarship to the top full-time junior TCEM student for his or her senior year.

Amount: $1,000
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: The scholarship is automatically awarded to the top full-time junior TCEM student. The student must have completed three semesters in the school and is the top student with the highest GPA in their major coursework.

No application is required.

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Bill and Joan McGowan Scholarship to a top-performing student in the TCEM department who contributes to the greater Indianapolis hospitality, tourism, and events industry while attending IUPUI.

Amount: $2,000

Eligibility criteria: Must be enrolled in the IUPUI Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and and have worked in the greater Indianapolis hospitality industry for six months or more.

  • an essay on the topic: Making a Difference: How I Contribute to Indiana Visitor and Guest Satisfaction and/or the Indiana Tourism Industry through My Work

Apply for the Bill and Joan McGowan Scholarship

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Per Moller Scholarship to a student in the TCEM department.

Amount: $1500
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: Must be a full-time TCEM student who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Priority consideration will be given to current or past employees or volunteers with IUPUI Event and Conferences Services or Campus Center Event Services.

To apply, submit:

  • scholarship application
  • a letter of recommendation from a current or former hospitality employer OR a current or former teacher (an additional personal reference may be submitted)
  • a one-page professional resume with three sections:
    • Employment history (for each position, be sure to include length of employment, and a reference person with his/her contact information),
    • Volunteer work/internships, and
    • Leadership activities/qualities

Apply for the Per Moller Scholarship

Shapiro's DelicatessanThe Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Max M. Shapiro Restaurant Excellence Scholarship to a student in the TCEM department.

Amount: $1,000
Number given: 2
Eligibility criteria: Must be a TCEM student with work experience in the food service industry.

To apply, submit:

  • scholarship application
  • an essay that answers the question: How does a locally-owned and operated restaurant like Shapiro’s Delicatessen contribute to building community, culture, and economic viability?
  • a list of your current employer and number of hours worked per week, as well as extracurricular school and community activities that you’ve participated in for the current year

Apply for the Max M. Shapiro Restaurant Excellence Scholarship

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Elias and Fofo Stergiopoulos Scholarship to a student enrolled in the TCEM department.

Amount: $1,000
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, have completed 15 credit hours of TCEM course work, have hospitality or other work experience, and have demonstrated leadership potential. Preference is given to working students and hospitality work experience.

To apply, submit:

  • scholarship application
  • a letter of recommendation from a former/current teacher or a former/current employer (Optionally, an additional personal reference letter may be submitted.)
  • a one-page outline or resume detailing your employment history and community involvement focusing on your leadership experience and/or activities

Apply for the Elias and Fofo Stergiopoulos Scholarship

The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management provides the Swinford Camp Brosius Scholarship for Camp Brosius tuition and fees to offset lost wages or hardship due to time away from work and family to take required courses at camp.

Amount: $1,200

Eligibility criteria: Must be a kinesiology (any major) or sports management student with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who is taking full-time summer classes at Camp Brosius. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and proof of summer employment.

  • a one-page letter detailing your financial dependence on your summer employment (30 or more hours of work per week) to support your education at IUPUI and why you feel you deserve the scholarship (if you must pay for child care or other services during your absence, you may mention these in your letter)

Apply for the Swinford Camp Brosius Scholarship

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Wilma Wohler Memorial Scholarship to a student enrolled in the TCEM department.

Amount: $500
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: Must be a junior or senior in fall 2018 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, have a passion for learning through travel, and have financial need (as determined by FAFSA).

Apply for the Wilma Wohler Memorial Scholarship

For transfer students

Transfer students entering the Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management degree program are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Jim Bennett Scholarship

The Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management awards the Jim Bennett Scholarship to students from Ivy Tech Community College who are pursuing a B.S. in Tourism, Conventions, Event Management as part of the TCEM 2+2 Agreement.

Amount: $1,000
Number given: 1
Eligibility criteria: Must be a current Ivy Tech hospitality administration student planning to enroll in the B.S. in Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management degree program and demonstrate financial need (as determined by FAFSA).
