2008-09 Welcome Note from the Dean’s Office

Dean Kellum
Dean Kellum

On behalf of the Indiana University School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, I am pleased to bring you greetings as we begin a new academic year.  We begin that year with some very encouraging news about our school and the IUPUI campus.  For the fall semester, the school has reached a record enrollment for both the number of majors in our programs and the number of credit hours taught by our faculty.  I should emphasize that this is sustained growth over a period of more than five years.

At the campus level, IUPUI enrollment exceeded 30,000 students for the first time in our history.  We have flirted with that standard for a number of years and are grateful to have finally achieved it.

But perhaps the greatest news as we begin the academic year is the recognition by U. S. News & World Report that IUPUI is one of 70 up-and-coming schools in the country that deserves watching.  While previously being recognized for its first-year learning communities and service learning, this latest honor places IUPUI in a prestigious category of colleges and universities.

Some of the priorities for the school in the new academic year include goals to increase research capacity, expand graduate programs, establish new international partnerships and to further diversify the student body and workforce.  We hope to do this while maintaining a long standing reputation for outstanding teaching and advising.

Truly the 2008-09 academic year is off to a tremendous start for the university, students and faculty!  If the Dean’s office can assist you in any way, please contact my staff or visit our offices at any time.

Sincerely,
P. Nicholas Kellum
Dean of the School

Dean’s Search Update

Effective Monday, May 12, 2008, IUPUI leadership announced that Dean Nick Kellum will continue to serve as the Dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management until a qualified candidate accepts this role within the university.  The Search and Screen Committee will initiate a new call for applications in the near future.

Individuals may still contribute to the P. Nicholas Kellum scholarship and submit letters for his commemorative memory book.  The July 10, 2008, campus-wide retirement celebration for Dean Kellum has been changed to April 20, 2009, and the July 19 event for alumni will be rescheduled for a date next Spring.  Please mark your calendars.

More updates will be posted as available.

June 2008: TCEM Department “On the Move”
By: Betty Jones, PhD – TCEM Associate Professor

Six Tourism, Conventions & Event Management Department [TCEM] faculty members will move their offices to the 1200 Waterway Building at the start of June 2008—a 1.27 mile ‘trip’ north [per MapQuest] from current offices in the IUPUI Physical Education/Natatorium Building.  The ‘space crunch’ on the IUPUI campus and continued growth in student enrollment and faculty positions in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management [PETM] led to the move.

Relocating to 1200 Waterway will be TCEM faculty members Susan Alvarez, Susie Benko, Jim Bennett, Linda Brothers, Betty Jones and Kristen Woods-Norris.  Remaining in the 2nd floor TCEM suite on campus will be Amanda Cecil, Yao-Yi Fu, Jinmoo Heo and Suosheng Wang.  TCEM Chair Sotiris Hji-Avgoustis will maintain an office on campus and at 1200 Waterway.   The office of a new TCEM faculty member, for whom a search is underway this spring, will be in the on-campus TCEM suite.

Besides offices, the TCEM area at 1200 Waterway will include a small conference room and kitchen area, a small reception area, and access to a larger conference room shared by the other IUPUI building occupant, the POLIS Center.   An academic research center with a practical and applied orientation, the POLIS Center is affiliated with the IUPUI School of Liberal Arts and is known for projects such as the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis and the annual Spirit & Place Festival.

On April 18, the TCEM faculty met to discuss potential impacts of the move and to develop strategies for operating in a two-location environment.   It is anticipated that one of the vacated TCEM campus offices will serve, at least temporarily, as a place for ‘satellite’ TCEM faculty to ‘land’ while on campus.

Growth and space reconfiguration have characterized PETM for over 10 years.  The 4-member TCEM Department joined the School of Physical Education in 1994, and physically relocated from the School of Engineering & Technology to PETM in the summer of 2000.  PETM had converted a Reading Room and Recorder’s office into offices for TCEM faculty and the School Recorder/TCEM secretary.

Within a couple years, the Recorder/TCEM secretary space was enclosed to provide another faculty office.  PETM moved the Recorder to an office closer to the Dean’s suite, and remodeled the School’s reception area to house secretaries for both TCEM and Physical Education.   In 2006, PETM retrofitted half of the Informal Learning Lab/Student Lounge on the Concourse Level into six faculty offices, three for faculty members in each department.
