Camp Brosius

Camp Brosius, situated on the turquoise waters of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, is an adventure and tradition to campers young and old.

Each spring, camp opens its doors to more than 100 IUPUI students, providing an experiential laboratory for degree-seeking students enrolled in the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management. Since 1921, physical education majors have attended camp for required coursework including camping leadership and lifetime sports. Tourism, Conventions and Event Management majors have participated annually since 1994 and are required to take two credit hours, including catering management and destination planning.

After college camp concludes, the adventure continues for Indiana University alumni, their families and guests.  Counselors are trained college students who work to provide a variety of age-appropriate programming to camp patrons.  Children and teens learn new skills and engage in activities designed to promote physical fitness and a love for camping.  Adults learn from guest lecturers and reconnect with family and friends in a serene setting. Counselors often launch their careers thanks to networking with IU alumni who are professionals in their desired field. For decades, generations of alumni and former camp counselors have transformed Camp Brosius into a long-standing tradition.

The IUPUI School of Physical Education and Tourism Management manages the camp. Student tuition and camp registration fees are modest -- just enough to cover conservative counselor wages and rising administration costs.  Much-needed resources for proactive property upkeep, renovations, and new equipment have been and continue to be scarce. Crumbling foundations, rotting wood caused by the damp lake environment, and aging furnishings are the result.

With the decline in available funding for higher education, camp administrators cannot turn to Indiana University or IUPUI for support. Camp Brosius needs your help to preserve the adventure and tradition.

What's being done?

When it assumed facility management in late 2004, the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management pledged to camp patrons and students to do its very best to ensure Camp Brosius' future.

The school already is helping by renovating many of the buildings, upgrading technology and utilities, and orchestrating strategic planning.

However, the time has arrived that the university no longer can continue to fund these expenses.  Despite this very good beginning, critical repairs are looming.  For the camp's educational and family-oriented services to continue, self-sustainability is imperative. Renovations are crucial.

You are invited to consider what Camp Brosius has meant to you, members of your family, and your friends. When you reflect upon your treasured camp memories, what makes you smile most? What values does family camping contribute to our society today? What life-changing moments can occur for a young child and families in this setting?

In addition, please think about the importance of experiential learning to students and recent graduates as they seek a career. Consider the character being developed in camp counselors as they serve as role models to young children. What positive impact does outdoor recreation have on the health of an increasingly unhealthy population?

After reflecting on these questions, we ask you to give to Camp Brosius at a level that is meaningful to you.

Your gifts to Camp would begin work immediately to provide for necessary renovations, new construction, and equipment needed to preserve this adventure and tradition.
