Ways to Give other than Cash Contributions
Planned Gifts
Appreciated Securities
Did you know that you can counter capital gains taxes and possibly receive a charitable income-tax deduction by gifting appreciated securities to the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management?
Let’s say your aunt gave you some stock before she passed away. You have no way of determining the cost basis of the gifted stock. Instead of trying to hassle with the arduous task of trying to determine your cost basis, you can donate or gift the securities along to the IU Foundation and designate the gift to the school.
Or, your wife bought shares of stock while she was employed with XYZ Corporation. This stock has split several times, and your capital gains taxes would be sizeable if you sell. You can instead gift the securities to the IU Foundation and designate your gift to Camp Brosius or the school.
By doing this, you will be able to avoid the capital gain taxes on the stock. The gain is the difference between the price your wife paid to purchase the stock and its current value. In addition, it’s possible that you can take a charitable deduction for the amount of the gift on your taxes.
For more information, contact Estacia Brandenburg at the IU Foundation (317-278-5653 or esmbrand@iupui.edu). Be sure to let Laura Klaum know of your intent to transfer the stock to the IU Foundation so she can be on the lookout for your gift and ensure it is credited to the appropriate school fund (317-274-1484 or lklaum@iupui.edu).
Important: Consult with your tax advisor to discuss your securities contribution prior to making your gift.
Estate Gifts
The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management and/or Camp Brosius are special to you, but you don’t feel comfortable contributing cash right now because you want to ensure you have resources available to you if you need them.
An alternative and easy way to contribute a gift to one of the school’s programs or departments is to include the school in your will. This keeps your cash in hand now when you need it, but provides for the school at a later date. All you need to do is share the following paragraph with your attorney:
"I give, devise, and bequeath the (sum of, percentage of, or residue of my estate) to Indiana University foundation (Tax ID # 35-6018940), a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices located in Bloomington, Indiana, for the benefit of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, IUPUI campus, to benefit (please name the school, specific department and/or program, or Camp Brosius)."
Your attorney and school staff may assist you with additional language if needed. Be sure to notify the school of your intent so that your precise wishes are understood and fulfilled by the school when the gift is distributed (lklaum@iupui.edu or 317/274-1484).
Employer Matching Gifts
Many employers will match employee gifts given to qualified charitable organizations. Some companies even match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. To determine whether or not your company will match gifts, check with your employer or visit matchinggifts.com/IUF/
If your company does match gifts, request a matching gift form from your employer and send it completed and signed with your gift. The IU Foundation will do the rest for you. The impact of your gift may be doubled or tripled, providing more resources for the special program or school.
Year-end Gifts to Indiana University
If you plan to make a gift at the end of 2008 to our school through the IU Foundation, please be aware that you must ensure two things occur to receive a receipt to use for your taxes in 2008:
Your check, made payable to the IU Foundation, must be dated no later than December 31, 2008.
Your contribution also must be postmarked by December 31, 2008.
You may mail your year-end contribution by December 31, 2008, to 901 West New York Street, PE 252, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
If you would like to transfer securities or make a credit card gift to the school after December 20, 2008, you may contact the IU Foundation’s gift planning office during regular office hours at 812/855-8311 or 800/558-8311. A gift planning officer should be available to assist you with your year-end contribution.
In all instances, if your contribution is postmarked or contributed after December 31, or your check dated in 2009, you will receive a receipt you may utilize for your 2009 income taxes, not 2008.
If you wish to earmark your gift for a specific program or department, be sure to indicate this information in your check’s memo line.
Indiana Taxpayers
A reminder to Indiana taxpayers: Gifts to state-funded universities can help you with your state income taxes. You may take a 50 percent tax credit on your state taxes for charitable gifts to our school or Camp Brosius.
For a joint return, the maximum credit is $200 (gift of $400 or more). For a single return, the maximum credit is $100 (gift of $200 or more).
In either case, you’ll need to complete Indiana’s College Credit tax form, also known as CC-40, and attach it to your state income-tax filing.
