Preventive practices are gaining favor over the traditional treatment approach to health care in the United States. Preventive strategies not only improve overall health and quality of life but are much more cost effective than the treatment required for diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
With the growing awareness that exercise plays a role beyond traditional areas such as athletic performance and K-12 education, graduate students pursue careers in health and wellness settings, become exercise specialists and personal trainers, and expand their knowledge base as higher-level educators.
The Master of Science in Kinesiology prepares graduate-level students in the areas of kinesiology. Our master's program offers two tracks: the clinical exercise science track is designed to provide students with an in-depth science-based understanding of the human body, its adaptations to physical activity, and how exercise/physical activity interventions can be prescribed to decrease risk for diseases related to sedentary living; the teaching and curriculum track provides in-service teachers professional development and addresses the current changes in pedagogy.
Faculty and staff include individuals with expertise in physiology, psychology, biomechanics, health and wellness, adapted physical education, rehabilitation, pedagogy, athletic administration, and sport management.
Because of the nature and diversity of IUPUI, students have opportunities to take courses in other areas such as health and rehabilitation, psychology, education, anatomy, special education, nursing and public health.
