Minors and Certificates

IU PETM students can enhance their undergraduate degrees by earning minors and certificates in special-interest areas. Students and professionals in other majors and careers may also complete certificates to enhance their skills.

A business minor or business certificate is required for the Sports Management major.

Coaching Minor

A minor in coaching prepares students interested in pursuing a variety of roles in the profession. The principles studied can also be applied to recreational programs and youth sport leagues. The competencies developed in this minor will encourage individuals to master the knowledge and skills necessary for coaching athletes at various age and ability levels. The content of this program is based on the national standards for athletic coaches developed by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and reflects the fundamental competencies the public should expect of athletic coaches at various levels of experience.

The Coaching Minor is available for students studying Exercise Science, Fitness Management and Personal Training, Sports Management, and Physical Education Teacher Education.

Events Management Minor

The Event Management Minor offered in the Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management (TCEM) attracts students pursuing careers in corporate, non-profit/fundraising, social/special, cultural, or sports events.

This minor is open to all IUPUI students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, except students pursuing the Tourism, Conventions and Event Management Bachelor’s degree.  The Events Management Minor will be awarded upon completion of the courses listed below with a passing grade and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Dance Minor

No dance audition is required for this modern dance program, which provides the opportunity to discover and develop your talents. You’ll get a thorough understanding of dance as a physical skill and a creative-movement form through a focus on technique, choreography, and performance. Students have the opportunity to perform pieces created by faculty, to join the IUPUI Moving Company, to create their own pieces for performance, and to attend state and national conferences. The dance minor is beneficial as a supplement to other career choices or as preparation for a range of careers in dance.

The Dance Minor is available to all IUPUI students.

Health Education Minor

Students gain foundational knowledge and skills related to promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing disease, and encouraging optimal living through behaviors that foster wellness. This minor adds a health focus to major plans of study and career tracks such as teaching, nursing, social work, and public health.

Hospitality Management Minor

The Hospitality Management Minor offered in the Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management (TCEM) attracts students pursuing careers in lodging, restaurants, bars, clubs, convention and conference centers, event venues, catering companies, and other hospitality service businesses.

This minor is open to all IUPUI students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree, except students pursuing the Tourism, Conventions and Event Management Bachelor’s degree.  The Hospitality Minor will be awarded upon completion of the courses listed below with a passing grade and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Sports Marketing Minor

The Sports Marketing minor provides students with a foundational understanding of sports marketing theory, and how sports marketing activities and strategies contribute to sports business success. Upon completion of the minor, students will be able to apply sports marketing theory to identify opportunities and solve problems faced by sport organizations in a variety of contexts.

The Sports Marketing minor is available to all IUPUI students, except for students who are pursuing the Sports Management degree.

Tourism Managment Minor

Personal Training Certificate

Teaching others to be fit requires a basic understanding of personal training principles. The Personal Training Certificate prepares prospective personal trainers for two national certification exams: the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Personal Trainer and/or the Certified Personal Trainer from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

The Personal Training Certificate is open to all IUPUI students.

Youth Physical Wellness Programming Certificate

This certificate is designed to prepare program completers to exhibit best practices for youth physical wellness programming in addressing the issues of childhood obesity and lack of physical activity.  This credential is intended for those students aiming to work with youth in unattached school time settings which include the day and summer camp industry.  Those completing the certificate will have the opportunity to learn concepts and translate this information into practice.

Cultural Heritage Tourism Certificate

The tourism environment is more diverse and global than ever due to the integration of economies, societies, and cultures. This certificate gives students the opportunity focus on TCEM courses that provide a more culturally diverse and global perspective. Course content and instructional methodologies are designed for a culturally diverse and international student population. Students learn about cultural heritage tourism and event management across cultures, communities, and countries.

The Sports Tourism Development Certificate is an innovative program that blends the study of sports and tourism. This program offers remarkable insight into the growing world of sports tourism, set in the context of the increasingly international nature of sports participation and sports spectators. This program combines theory and practice to prepare students for opportunities in amateur and professional sports, resort and tourism industries, parks, recreational centers, and more. Students will also develop a range of skills that include teamwork, analytical thinking, and communication—and participate in volunteer and service-learning experiences.

Beverage Management Services Certificate

This certificate is awarded through Purdue University and is designed to provide core knowledge of the wide range of wines, beers, and spirits around the world. The coursework equips those in a supervisory capacity with the authority and confidence to make informed decisions in a wide variety of industry positions that include both managers who oversee food and beverage departments or run upscale restaurants and managers who need to advise bar staff, management, and customers with making selections of wines, beers, and spirits.

Travel Planning Certificate

Upon completion of the Travel Planning Certificate, students will have a foundation for building a career in travel services. The certificate gives students core skills in global geography, marketing, travel trends, and travel segmentation—as well as experiential learning on board a cruise line. This certificate is designed to provide a wider perspective of travel planning and how it fits in the arena of tourism and hospitality.

Events Management Certificate

Companies are looking for graduates with expertise in planning their diverse corporate events. The Events Management Certificate allows students to focus on an array of interesting sectors in the event planning field. In addition to planning meetings, interested students may prepare for careers in special events such as weddings, conferences, and festivals. Students are also exposed to elements of sporting events management, convention and meeting sales, international meeting planning, and nonprofit meeting planning.

The Hospitality Management Certificate is awarded through Purdue University and is designed for individuals in the early years of their lodging management careers who wish to develop a solid foundation of management concepts and skills.
