Academic Programs

Five rewarding career tracks. One remarkable school.

Connecting students to rewarding, fast-growing careers—that is our focus at the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management (PETM). We offer our students and graduates the power to engage in meaningful work through five exciting, in-demand fields that open up hundreds of career paths. Our students have access to faculty who take pride in seeing them achieve their career aspirations—becoming physical therapists, sports team executives, meeting planners, event managers, physical education teachers, hospitality directors, and occupational therapists.

Real-life, hands-on learning sets us apart from similar programs, and PETM graduates will tell you that our convenient location in downtown Indianapolis places students in a living, learning laboratory. Through our affiliated experiential programs, PETM students provide health screenings and wellness classes to low-income members of the community, teach children with disabilities to develop coordination and self-esteem, participate in leadership activities, and more.

Internships with the NCAA Final Four, the Children’s Museum, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Kentucky Derby—and many prominent events and organizations—expose our students to what life after graduation will be like, and prepare them for some of the nations’ most rewarding professions.

Our Academic Tracks

Our Department of Kinesiology offers four undergraduate academic tracks: Exercise Science, Fitness Management and Personal Training, Sports Management, and Physical Education Teacher Education—as well as a master’s degree with two concentration options. Many of our students in Exercise Science and Fitness Management and Personal Training pursue graduate studies for careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other medical professions.

Our Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management offers the undergraduate track in Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management (TCEM) and a master’s degree in event tourism.

Several certificate programs and minors allow our students to augment their education according to their interests and career focuses.

We also partner with the IUPUI Military Science Department to provide a Military Science program that prepares cadets who are commissioned by the U.S. Army, the Army Reserves, or the Army National Guard.

We welcome you to find your fit and exercise your career options.
